Anxiety and panic disorders are not to be taken lightly.
In the United States alone, there are a shocking 20 million people who have to learn to live with different versions and intensities of anxiety and panic disorders.
Ask any doctor and they will make sure to tell you that these disorders and the panic attacks that accompany them are dangerous situations and circumstances which can result in the discontinuation of a regular daily routine.
One of the things that people will often ask if whether or not anxiety and panic disorders are different or one and the same. Speaking generally and make things simple, anxiety and panic disorders are the relatively the same condition. The terms that an individual may use to describe the anxiety and panic disorders though could have very different meanings and connotations.
When someone says ‘anxiety attack’ they may be talking about one of the following:
- Sometimes, when talking about anxiety and panic disorders, when a person complains about an anxiety attack, they could mean that they felt a very intense period of anxiousness. The strength and effect of their emotions could have been multiplied with no actual panic involved.
- If the individual does not generally often experience an anxiety attack, the usage of the term ‘anxiety attack’ may just mean slightly heightened anxiety. There would be no actual attack being spoken of.
- The simplest meaning of an anxiety attack is that the person has experienced or is referring to a panic attack. Anxiety and panic disorders generally share the same symptoms so the attacks could – in some form – be referred to as the same thing.
There are many endorsed methods on how to cure panic attacks. Methods may come in the form of therapy, medication or lifestyle changes. Many people may choose to do a combination of two or all of the methods.
Generally, there are six steps that can be employed to help overcoming anxiety and panic disorders:
- Step 1: The first step is to acknowledge that there is a problem. Many people like to dismiss the fact that they have suffered an attack associated with anxiety and panic disorders saying that it’s just a one-time thing. Although this would be the best case scenario, most of the time, that isn’t the case.
- Step 2: Second step is to find out what may be causing or facilitating anxiety and panic disorders. Many people have been surprised to find that what they think are the triggers of their anxiety and panic disorders are completely different.
- Step 3: See a doctor. Just as you need to see a doctor with any other illness or disorder, you must get a diagnosis from a professional in order to pinpoint which of the many anxiety and panic disorders that you’re suffering from.
- Step 4: Find a support system. When you’re dealing with anxiety and panic disorders, you need someone that you can talk to about the problems and other feelings that you may be experiencing.
- Step 5: Start to cope. Doctors can provide a handy list of ways to cope with the disorder. Start trying to employ these methods in your life and kick start the healing process.
- Step 6: Choose a treatment that works best for you. Medication is often the first step of many people but the fact of the matter is that you don’t always need medication. Sometimes therapy is enough.
Dealing with anxiety and panic disorders cannot be done alone. Make sure to find a support system, whether it’s with your family or group therapy, to help you along the road to recovering from your disorder.
